Bushbuck subspecies & regional distribution

Harnessed Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus scriptus)
Found in West and Central Africa, from Senegal to Angola. This is the most brightly coloured subspecies, featuring a vivid “harness” of white horizontal and vertical stripes on its flanks.
Cape Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus sylvaticus)
Associated with the southern regions of South Africa, from the Cape to Mpumalanga. Generally, the further south you go, the darker the coat becomes. It features a dark brown colour with white spots on the rump and a white dorsal stripe.
Limpopo or Cummings Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus roualeyni)
Synonymous with the Limpopo River Valley. This form represents a transition from the dark Cape Bushbuck to the lighter Chobe variety. It often features longer horns and a lighter shade of brown.
Chobe Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus ornatus)
Native to the Chobe and Zambezi regions. This is a highly attractive, ornate antelope with a bright chestnut hue and several white vertical stripes and spots on the haunches.
Masai or Mweru Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus massaicus)
Distributed throughout East Africa, including Tanzania and Kenya. It is light brown with a white dorsal crest and broken striping on the flanks that often appears as spots.
Menelik’s or Arusi Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus meneliki)
A mountain subspecies found in the Ethiopian Highlands. This is the darkest form of all Bushbuck, equipped with a long, shaggy coat to withstand high-altitude climates.
Abyssinian Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus decula)
Found in Ethiopia and northern Somalia. It has a yellowish-brown colour and a distinctive white dorsal stripe, with striping on the flanks that is solid on top and broken into dots below.
Nile Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus bor)
Located west of the Nile in South Sudan and the D.R.C. It takes its name from the Bor counties and is a key target for collectors on an Africa hunting trip.
Preferred caliber for Bushbuck
While the Bushbuck is not a large antelope, it is exceptionally tough and most often found in very dense cover—the “thick stuff.” Shots are frequently quick and taken through brush, making bullet weight and construction more important than velocity.
We recommend a preferred caliber in the .270 Winchester Magnum to .30-06 Springfield range. A .270 Winchester Magnum or any of the common .30 caliber cartridges is an excellent choice. Many clients already carry a .375 H&H for larger game, and we often prefer it for Bushbuck as well because it offers outstanding penetration and reliability in thick bush.
Shot placement
Correct shot placement is critical for an ethical harvest. Because Bushbuck are often encountered in deep shadow or thick cover, careful shot selection is essential, and your Professional Hunter will guide you to wait for the correct angle before taking the shot.
A well-placed shoulder shot or a good centre-mass chest shot is recommended, as it offers the highest chance of a quick, humane kill, even in less-than-ideal conditions. Taking the right shot ensures respect for the animal and upholds our commitment to responsible, sustainable trophy hunting.
