Cape Buffalo (Syncerus)
The genus name Syncerus is derived from the Greek words syn (together) and keras (horn). This perfectly describes the “boss” — the heavy bone shield formed by the meeting of the horn bases in a mature Cape Buffalo trophy.
Genus taxonomy and species
When planning an African hunting safari, it is essential to understand the quarry. The African Buffalo belongs to the genus Syncerus, first described by Brian Houghton Hodgson in 1847. While taxonomic debate continues among scientists, hunters today generally recognise two primary buffalo types that are legally hunted within their respective habitats:
- African Savanna Buffalo (Syncerus caffer)
- Dwarf Forest Buffalo (Syncerus nanus)
The African Savanna Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is the quintessential target for big game hunting in South Africa, Botswana, and Mozambique. Its name, caffer, historically refers to the animal’s dark, near-black hide. Major subspecies and distribution
1. Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer)
This is the most iconic subspecies for hunting the Big Five. Their range extends from the Cape in South Africa through Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and into East Africa. Cape Buffalo are characterised by their massive size and the deep “drop” of their horns. Hunting Botswana for these giants is a highlight for any serious trophy hunting Africa enthusiast.
2. Nile or Northeastern Buffalo (Syncerus caffer aequinoctialis)
Found near the Nile River and into South Sudan and Ethiopia. These buffalo are slightly smaller than the Cape variety, with horns that tend to turn more upright and feature a less pronounced boss.
3. West African and Dwarf Forest Buffalo

- West African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer brachyceros): An intermediate buffalo in size and horn length, often displaying a reddish hue.

Preferred caliber and shot placement
Cape Buffalo are exceptionally resilient and demand proper respect. By law, the minimum calibre for Cape Buffalo is a .375 H&H. However, our African Professional Hunters prefer the added stopping power and reliability of .40 calibre rifles such as the .416 Rigby or .450 Rigby.
Double rifles such as the .470 NE and .500 NE remain proven, time-honoured choices, and many Professional Hunters favour them for their reliability, balance, and immediate second shot when guiding clients on dangerous game hunts. These classic calibres embody the traditional style of African big game hunting and provide tremendous power and confidence on thick-skinned animals.
That said, many Professional Hunters continue to prefer bolt-action rifles for their increased magazine capacity and versatility, particularly in calibres such as the .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, .458 Winchester Magnum, and .458 Lott, all of which remain highly effective and widely trusted in the field.
Personal preference from Graham Sales: clients should use the calibre they shoot best and with which they are most familiar and comfortable.
Expert tip: precise shot placement is critical. While a broadside shot into the engine room or chest area (heart/lung area) is preferred, clients should be prepared for quartering-toward or full frontal opportunities as well, which are common in real-world Cape Buffalo hunting.
