The majestic Sable Antelope

A premier African Hunting Safari guide

At Graham Sales Safaris, we specialize in providing the ultimate African hunting Safari for one of the continent’s most iconic trophies: the Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger). Derived from the Greek words Hippo for horse and tragos for goat, this “horse-like goat” is a bucket-list species for any serious sportsman.

Whether you are planning your first plains game hunting trip or are a seasoned collector of rare subspecies, our experienced African Professional Hunters ensure a sustainable and ethical pursuit in the heart of the wild.

Taxonomy and history of the Sable

The genus Hippotragus has a rich scientific history. While seven different names were proposed between 1822 and 1845—including Egocerus, Aigocerus, and Ozanna—the name Hippotragus, established in 1846 by Carl Jakob Sundevall, remains the recognized standard today.

When you hunt with a premier Safari Outfitter, understanding the heritage of your quarry adds immense value to the trophy hunting experience.

Subspecies of the Sable Antelope

When booking your Africa hunting trip, it is vital to know which subspecies you are targeting. Plains game hunting in Africa offers incredible variety, and the Sable is the crown jewel. Five subspecies are traditionally recognized:

Southern Sable (Hippotragus niger niger)

Often called the Harris buck, it was first described by Major Sir William Cornwallis Harris. It is famous for its “Swartwitpens” appearance—black with a white belly—and is found across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana.

Roosevelt’s Sable (Hippotragus niger roosevelti)

Named after former US President Theodore Roosevelt. These bulls tend to be slightly browner than the jet-black Southern variety, while the cows are a vibrant reddish-brown.

Royal or Giant Sable (Hippotragus niger variani)

Found in central Angola, this subspecies boasts the most imposing horns of the genus. It is uniquely characterized by the lack of an upper white stripe from the eye to the muzzle.

Kirk’s Sable (Hippotragus niger kirkii)

Named after Sir John Kirk, an associate of David Livingstone. This subspecies is intermediate in appearance and features a distinct white patch in front of the eye.

Ansell’s Sable (Hippotragus niger anselli)

A relatively newly described subspecies named after zoologist William Frank Harding Ansell. It is distinguished by white facial striping that is considerably broader than that of its Southern cousins.

Hunting strategy and ethical standards

As a leading African hunting Outfitter, we pride ourselves on free-range hunting principles. We believe sustainable hunting is the backbone of conservation, ensuring these magnificent animals roam the African bush for generations to come.

Shot placement

Correct shot placement is the hallmark of an ethical hunter. The Sable is a robust, thick-skinned, and sometimes aggressive animal when cornered. Under the guidance of a Professional Hunter from Graham Sales Safaris, you will be coached on the exact vitals to ensure a swift, clean, and respectful harvest.

Preferred caliber for Sable

While Sable is part of a plains game hunting package, they are “tough as nails” and require respect.

Minimum: .30 caliber.

Preferred calibers: .30-06 Springfield or .300 Win Mag.
